Kabul Embassy Protected by Delta’s Portable Barriers

VALENCIA, CALIF. – February 6, 2002 – With the reopening of the United States embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, security personnel have implemented Delta Scientific’s IP500 Portable Barrier systems to protect entrances from unauthorized vehicles. Able to be deployed or relocated for full manual or automatic operation within hours, Delta Scientific’s quick deployment Series IP500 Barrier can stop and destroy a 15,000 pound (6,800 kg) truck traveling at 30 mph (48 km/h) in less than 20 feet (6 m).
“Since 9-11, the need for easy to install, temporary, drop-arm beam barriers to quickly block entrances to embassies or roads to embassies is a critical program of the United States Department of State,” explains David Dickinson, Delta Scientific senior vice president. “With this barrier, they can protect embassy personnel and visitors within the day.”
No excavation or foundation is required for the new portable barrier’s two support buttresses. They can be set on concrete or asphalt paving, undisturbed soil or any combination. The unfilled buttresses weigh less than 700 pounds (318 kg) and can be filled with concrete, sand, gravel or other available media either at the site or from a remote location.
Barrier sections can be moved using a small forklift, pallet jack, crane or handcart. The portable system can be operated using any Delta hydraulic, pneumatic or manual system including fully automatic access or remote control by hardwire or RF links.
According to Dickinson, militaries are also major purchasers of the IP500 and the barrier was first used successfully to protect NATO Forces in Kosovo and elsewhere. Delta Scientific has also supplied bollards and other counter-terrorist barricade systems to over 160 U.S. embassies and consulates in 130-plus countries. In the United States alone, Delta has secured over 110 Federal buildings, including courthouses and FBI locations, since the Oklahoma City bombing (April 19, 1995). Over 85 percent of all U.S. nuclear power plants are protected by Delta vehicle barricade systems.
