FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PALMDALE, CALIF. – May 27, 2020 – Delta Scientific, the leading manufacturer of counter-terrorist vehicle control systems used in the United States and internationally, today announced that, on Thursday, May 21, just after 6 am, a terrorist tried to speed past a Delta Scientific  MP5000 portable barrier onto the Naval Air Station – Corpus Christi. The intruder shot at the gate’s base security sailor but struck her bullet-resistant vest. According to the Associated Press, the sailor, who survived, then rolled over and hit the switch that raised the barrier, preventing the terrorist from gaining access to the base.

Delta Scientific reports that this incident marks the third time in 15 months that an MP5000 portable barrier has prevented unauthorized vehicle intrusion at the Naval Air Station – Corpus Christi. On February 14, 2019, a trespasser attempting to flee across the base crashed into the barrier, causing the vehicle to erupt into flames. Later that same year, on October 7, 2019, the barrier also stopped a stolen pick-up truck at the entrance gate. The May 21 attack, involving a determined assailant, occurred only six months after the prior attempt.

Delta’s totally self-contained MP5000 mobile deployable vehicle crash barriers now carry an ASTM rating as high as M50, able to stop and disable a 15,000 lb (66.7 kN) G.V.W. vehicle moving at 50 mph (80.4 kph). They tow into position to control vehicle access within 15 minutes. No excavation or sub-surface preparation is required. Once positioned, the mobile barricades will unpack themselves by using hydraulics to raise and lower the barriers off their wheels. DC-powered pumps will then raise or lower the barriers. Once the event is over, procedures are reversed and the barriers are towed away.

In many situations, such as at the air base, the temporary barriers provide more flexibilities than a permanent solution. In addition, Delta always keeps an inventory of the MP5000s for purchase and quick delivery at their manufacturing facility in Palmdale, Calif. In many cases, they are needed for events that come up quickly, such as political or celebrity visits and other unexpected incidents.

Set in a foundation only 18 inches (46 cm) deep, the Delta DSC501 is able to survive and operate after a 1.2 million foot pound impact. Upon extracting the vehicle, the barricade is certified to be fully functional and perform 27,000 cycles with no wear. Its K12/L3 certification meets the government’s highest level and exceeds Department of State and Department of Defense requirements.

“We look forward to protecting our men and women in uniform from the threat of terrorist car bombings,” says Delta Scientific Vice President of Sales Mike Murray. “It is absolutely imperative to our national security that only the best and strongest barricade systems are installed to safeguard them.”
The DSC501 is typically used in applications where buried pipes, power lines and fiber optic communication lines pose potential excavation issues. The shallow foundation also reduces installation complexity, time, materials and corresponding costs. The DSC501 is suitable for high water table locations and areas with corrosive soils.

Front face warning lights warn drivers that the barricade is in the “up” position. There is also an open area on the front for signage. Open channel construction allows the option of specifying hot dip galvanizing. To raise or lower the barricade, the DSC501 uses Delta’s proven hydraulic power systems and controls. The anti-terrorist barrier is operated with Delta control panels, card readers, keypads or radio controls.
