Introducing the DSC50BR: Portable Protection Against Vehicle and Ballistic Threats

Article Summary
Delta Scientific has introduced the DSC50BR, a 172-pound portable barrier designed to address vehicle and ballistic threats at public events, law enforcement perimeters and other temporary security locations. The DSC50BR retains the ASTM SC30 crash rating of the original DSC50 and passed independent ballistic testing to UL 752 Levels 9 and 10.
When we developed the DSC50 Portable “S” Barrier, we had a clear goal. We wanted to give security teams a practical way to protect crowds from vehicle threats without installing a permanent barrier system.
Now we have taken that protection further.
The new DSC50BR combines portable vehicle mitigation with ballistic resistance. It gives event-security teams and law enforcement another layer of protection in places where threats can change quickly.
Tested Against Level 9 and Level 10 Threats
The DSC50BR passed independent ballistic testing to UL 752 Levels 9 and 10 at Element U.S. Space & Defense in Belcamp, Maryland.
The barrier was tested against two high-powered rounds:
- A .30-06 caliber, 166-grain M2 armor-piercing round
- A .50-caliber, 710-grain M2 Ball round
Both rounds were traveling at more than 2,900 feet per second. Neither completely penetrated the barrier.
One part of the test surprised me. When the rounds struck the barrier, they broke apart. The barrier’s curved wings helped contain much of the resulting shrapnel close to the unit instead of allowing it to scatter as widely.
We designed those wings to help stop and redirect an impacting vehicle. Seeing them also help control debris during the ballistic test showed us another practical benefit of the design.
Vehicle Protection Still Comes First
The DSC50BR retains the ASTM SC30 crash rating of the original DSC50. It is designed to stop a 2,430-pound passenger vehicle traveling at 30 miles per hour.
Three connected barriers can protect a typical traffic lane. Their spacing also allows pedestrians to move through the perimeter.
This is important at public events. Security teams need to stop unauthorized vehicles while still allowing people, staff and emergency personnel to move through the area.
The barrier can also serve as a visible traffic deterrent. Drivers can clearly see the protected boundary before reaching it.
Protection That Can Move With the Event
Ballistic-resistant products are often part of permanent installations. That can limit where and how they are used.
The DSC50BR is portable.
Each unit weighs 172 pounds and can be moved by one person using its dedicated three-wheel transporter. Teams can reposition the barriers as entrances, crowd patterns and security needs change.
That flexibility is useful for:
- Festivals and concerts
- Parades and street closures
- Law enforcement checkpoints
- Public demonstrations
- Government and military facilities
- Temporary secure perimeters
- Emergency-response operations
- High-profile public gatherings
Security plans sometimes change within minutes. A portable system gives teams the ability to respond without excavation, construction or permanent changes to the site.

Two DSC50 Options
We will continue to offer the standard DSC50 for crowd protection and hostile vehicle mitigation.
The DSC50BR is available for locations that also face ballistic threats. It uses the familiar DSC50 deployment approach while adding protection against Level 9 and Level 10 ballistic threats.
Both models give security teams a portable way to establish a clear perimeter. The right version depends on the threats identified during the site assessment.
Existing DSC50 units cannot be upgraded or retrofitted into DSC50BR units. The ballistic-resistant model is manufactured as a separate configuration.
Built for the People Securing the Perimeter
Our engineers spent years developing the DSC50 platform. They tested different prototypes, balance points and traction systems to create a barrier that could stop a vehicle while remaining practical to transport and deploy.
The DSC50BR builds on that work.
Crowd protection, hostile vehicle mitigation and ballistic threats can now be addressed with one portable product. For events facing both vehicle and ballistic threats, the DSC50BR can be repositioned within minutes to help fortify an area and protect the public and the officers securing it.
The DSC50BR is available to order immediately.
